About Of Methimez 5 Mg
Methimez 5 mg contains Methimazole, which is primarily used to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). It works by reducing the production of thyroid hormones.
Uses:
- Treatment of Graves’ disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism)
- Preoperative management before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy
- Used to control excessive thyroid hormone levels
Dosage:
- The dosage varies based on the severity of hyperthyroidism.
- Typically, the starting dose is 5–40 mg per day in divided doses.
- Maintenance dose is usually lower and is adjusted based on thyroid function tests.
Side Effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset
- Rash, itching, or allergic reactions
- Joint pain
- Hair loss (rare)
- Agranulocytosis (a severe drop in white blood cells, which can increase infection risk)
Precautions:

- Monitor blood counts due to the risk of agranulocytosis.
- Avoid in pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor, as it can affect fetal thyroid function.
